Meet the Black Pagoda Lipstick Plant 🌸
Exotic, trailing, and utterly unique — the Black Pagoda Lipstick Plant (Aeschynanthus longicaulis) is a plant that turns heads before it even blooms. Its dark, mottled leaves patterned in deep green and purple are a work of art on their own. Then come the tubular red-orange flowers, dramatically emerging like lipstick from a dark tube — an absolute showstopper cascading from a hanging basket.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light. More light means more blooms! Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the leaves, but too little light will prevent flowering.
- Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. These like to dry out slightly between waterings — overwatering is the most common mistake. Excellent drainage is a must.
- Humidity: Loves humidity (50%+). Mist occasionally or use a pebble tray to keep it happy.
- Temperature: Prefers 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.
- Soil: Light, well-draining mix — an orchid or African violet mix works beautifully. Avoid heavy potting soil.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks during spring and summer with a high-phosphorus liquid fertilizer to encourage blooming. Reduce in fall/winter.
- Display: Looks stunning in a hanging basket where its trailing vines can cascade freely!
- Repotting: Every 2 years. Slightly rootbound plants tend to bloom better.
✅ Pet-Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans — a rare bonus!
