Meet the Zebra Plant 🦓
Bold, tropical, and breathtakingly dramatic — the Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) is a true showpiece that earns its place in any plant collection twice over. Its large, glossy dark green leaves are boldly striped with brilliant white veins that create a stunning graphic contrast — stunning even before it blooms. And when it does bloom, it puts on one of the most spectacular shows in the houseplant world: towering bright yellow-orange flower bracts that last for weeks. A plant that's always dressed to impress.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Good light maintains the dramatic white-veined foliage and encourages blooming — avoid direct sun which scorches leaves, and low light which dulls the contrast and prevents flowering.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged — water when the top of the soil just begins to dry. Sensitive to both drought (causes leaf drop) and overwatering (causes root rot). Use room temperature water.
- Humidity: High humidity (60%+) is essential. A humidifier nearby is strongly recommended — dry air causes brown leaf tips and edges quickly.
- Temperature: Thrives between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Very sensitive to cold drafts, air conditioning, and temps below 60°F — keep it cozy!
- Soil: Well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix — standard potting soil with a little perlite works well.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 1–2 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce in fall/winter.
- Blooming: Produces spectacular bright yellow/orange flower bracts — one of the most dramatic blooms in the houseplant world! Blooms last several weeks. Remove spent bracts to keep the plant tidy.
- Repotting: Every 1–2 years in spring when rootbound.
✅ Pet-Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans — a rare bonus for such a stunning plant!
